You Have Died of Dysentery: The Oregon Trail

Severe diarrhea containing mucus and/or blood. Sweet.

Although Lewis and Clark were pretty bad ass, one could maintain that they are STILL cool. However,  STWC likes to keep the nostalgia within the last century (more inline with our reader base). So in conjunction with the release of this classic to the iPhone (don’t worry – Gameloft is keeping dysentery in this revolutionary device version), we’d like to take you back to a time when everyday decisions like dealing with snake bites and rummaging through abandoned wagons sometimes cost the lives of friends and family. If you couldn’t wait for the river to recede you probably lost an ox or two as well.

With weak competition like Where in the World is Carmen San Diego the “OT” (as the kids on facebook are calling it these days) reigned supreme and was re-released numerous times, including OT:II which was revamped to allow a larger role for Women and Minorities: another win for President Obama.

Even if the Trail didn’t actually teach kids anything about problem solving in the real world, they at least walked away with one lesson learned: Get as far from Missouri as you can and Never, ever ford the river.

Personally, I preferred honing my Piranha hunting skills with my Limited Edition Copy of The Amazon Trail, but if you’re still really into this sort of thing we found the original version of this game on the web (crappy sound effects included!) so that you can pretend you’re back in the 6th grade computer lab.

Manifest Destiny!
